Overview
Thunderbird is a free email, news, RSS, and chat client which can be used as an alternative to Outlook and other email clients.

This article goes through the steps to set up Thunderbird with your email account.
Instructions
- First, click the 3 lines on the right side of Thunderbird then click on Account Settings:
- Down the bottom left of Thunderbird click Account Actions then Add Mail Account:
- Next, Fill out the Email Address and the Password.
The Your full name field will be what people see when you send them an email. - Once the details have been filled out click Configure manually:
- For Steps 6 and 7 pelase see the following article for our recommend email connection setting.
For Incoming Server Details:
- The Protocol will be set to IMAP by default which is the recommended option, you can change it to POP3 if needed.
- For the Hostname, Thunderbird has already prefilled it however there is a full-stop at the beginning which will need to be removed.
- For the Port Number, you will want to use 993 for IMAP and 995 for POP.
- Connection Security and Authentication Method can be left as default.
- The username will already be filled out and you don’t need to change it.
- For Outgoing Server details:
- Update the hostname to match the incoming hostname.
- The port number will be 465.
- Connection Security and Authentication Method can be left as default.
- The username will already be filled out and you don’t need to change it.
- Once all the details have been entered click on Re-test to have the connection details checked.
- Once the test is complete, the settings will be saved and you can click Done:
- On the next window, click on ‘Finish’ then you should see your Inbox in the top left.
Update Authentication Method
- In Thunderbird App, Right click on your Email address, then Settings.
- Under your Email Address click on Server Settings, then Drop down Arrow and select Encrypted password.
- Click on the Account Settings top of page to close Window, All done.
